Themes

Giving new themes a try. The last them that was being used on my blog had been active since the creation of this website. I felt it was time for a change, especially now that I am writing more, and more people seem to be visiting and actually reading what I write. :)

If anyone has any advice on creating a custom theme let me know! I’m very interested in doing so eventually. Especially since I am getting more and more into design and coding again (for those that don’t know, in my younger days I was very much into web development)  Also any feed back on the current theme I am using would be greatly appreciated! I personally like it very much, bright in contrast to the dull gray and black that I was using before. The colors go very good, and it’s easy on the eyes. I think it will encourage people to visit more frequently because it’s more inviting and friendly.

To quickly update on the status of my clients, I made contact with one of them, and I am scheduled to meet up with them the 28th which is next week. We will be discussing scheduling and the treatment plan. Looking forward to this meeting. In a couple hours I will make contact with my second client and hopefully schedule a meeting for the next couple days to discuss the same things.

Wow! Two posts in one day.

Finally Starting Work

It’s been three weeks since I was initially interviewed and hired, but finally, after 4 days and 12 hours of training I am starting! Yesterday was my final day of training and we mostly went over note taking. Today I went in and was assigned people to work for as a Basic Skills Trainer. I am honestly very excited to start, after training I am very confident this will be work that is very rewarding on a personal level, and will keep me happy and content with my life while I am not on the go.

In the next hour or so I need to call and schedule a meeting with my first client and do a meet and greet and discuss a schedule for me to come over and work, together on the goals lined up in the treatment plan. The hours are going to be some what limited because I have to work around the schedules of my clients. I don’t think I’ll be working more than 20 or 25 hours a week, which is two or three clients usually, depending on what my clients require. On the side the when I am not teaching Basic Skills, my friend Shane, who you may remember split my tongue about three weeks ago (which is doing fantastic I might add!), asked if i would be willing to help out around his shop as much as I could. He said he’d compensate a bit for my time and help which is awesome. So i’m looking very forward to that as well.

For the first time in a while I finally have a schedule building up! And paperwork, lots of paper work. But it feel pretty nice finally have responsibility again. We’ll see how long that lasts though, haha I have a bad case of Wanderlust, and while it may be managed right now, It’s sure to break out again before long.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned for more from me!  As you have noticed I am writing quite a bit more now.

New Beginnings Start With New Hair!

Today is my first day of training for my new job, and what better way to prepare myself then head out and get my hair cut! This was probably the first time i have paid for a haircut in about a year and it looks great! (See pictures attached below) I went to a place called Sports Clips. Very friendly ladies work there, and because I was a new customer I go the VIP Treatment! Hot Towels, Massage, hair washing, she styled it up for me before I left, and even shaped my beard for me.

As for the new job, I am very excited to start and see what it’s all about. It took me much longer to actually get hired on and start working, so making it out to Europe like I still have hopes for in May is going to be really tough, but I think I can pull it off! I’ll update on that later.  Next week after I have started working, and not just training I’ll be sure to write a nice detailed report of how it is, what I’m doing and what the work is like.

That’s pretty much all I have to say for now! Wish me luck!New Dew

Ranting

My daily news source online comes from Rawstory.com. I find the news there to be rather reliable, up to date, and covering the topics I care about the most, and far less one sided than most major news sources on the Internet and television. Today as the home page loaded, I clicked through the headlines to see what was hot in the news. As an openly gay citizen, headlines involving LGBT anything catch my eye and draw me in instantly. Today when I clicked on the article titled Indiana teacher wants straight prom because LGBT people have no ‘purpose’ I was outraged after reading only the first sentence! I encourage anyone reading my rant, to please go and read the article. For those who are to lazy, fear not, Here are some lines I am quoting for you.

A special education teacher from Sullivan, Indiana is joining a group of students, parents and other Christians in the community who are calling for a prom that bans LGBT people because she says they have no “purpose in life.”

WTWO-TV reporter Paige Preusse asked Medley if she thought “gay people had some sort of purpose in life.”

After taking a deep breath, the teacher replied: “I don’t. I personally don’t. I’m sorry. I just — I don’t understand it… A gay student or adult or person isn’t going to come up isn’t going to come up and make some change, unless it’s because they realize, ‘You know what? It was a choice and I’m choosing God.’”

This should give you enough of an idea of the level of bigotry that has set me off today. I’m not going to talk much about this, because I could go on forever and ever. And thankfully a friend of mine saw a quick rant from my facebook about this and shared a link to a story on Change.org asking for the termination of employment.
However my feelings are still very strong for topics like this. No one should be subjected to this kind of hate, bigotry, and insensitivity, especially young people! I really don’t care how you feel about gay people, or black people, or illegal immigrants, or any other minority, but there are just some things you need to keep to yourself, because you never know when someone around you is going to affected, and what’s worse, they may be silent effected, and you won’t know until it’s to late.
Please go and sign the petition to have this evil person removed from the education system!

Diana Medley is a Special Educaiton teacher in the Northeast School Corporation of Sullivan County and spoke ON CAMERA to WTWO-TV saying that “Being Gay Is A Choice…” Then went on to tell a television reporter that gay people don’t have a purpose in life? This is woman teaching our children — including openly gay students. Gay Teenagers have the HIGHEST rate of suicide in our country, surely Mrs. Medley’s lack of concern for their emotional and mental well-being, as well as her mis-understanding of their purpose in life makes her a threat to not only students in her classroom, but, in her community! – Change.org Sign Here

Finally, let me leave you with this video clip from Prayers For Bobby.

Drop Box

By now, I’m sure most people have heard of cloud storage, or online data storage. I gotta say, I have never been a fan, I don’t trust it, I don’t feel safe uploading my personal files to the the Internet, even if there is nothing to hide. The fact that it is put online is a risk in my opinion. But I guess I’m just paranoid, I know enough to be scared.  But, when I signed up for drop box, I figured it would be a great way to share files with friends or access certain documents (mostly pictures) from computers that weren’t mine. After about 8 months of not using this service, I am very glad I did, and even more glad that I had my old phone synced up with it. Because when my phone crashed and died I thought that I lost all of my pictures, travel pictures, pictures people had sent me, videos, and all that good stuff. I just logged into my account to find that I had all of that backed up online! Lucky me.

Currently I am going through everything, and what a flashback. The majority of the pictures are from the last year while I was away traveling the country, and a good chunk from my time living in Boston.

The amount of storage you get is not very great, starts out at 2gb of free storage, but there are opportunities to increase the amount of storage available to you. At the time of writing this I have 3.4GB  of space to save my data. You can increase this by referring people, going through a tutorial, syncing your phone, uploading your first file, or if you need mega storage you can also purchase more for a monthly service fee. Depending on the amount of data you have that you need stored you can decided what is best. But if you have more than 100gbs of data. I would suggest a service such as Carbonite. While I was working at Staples we sold Carbonite, and it was only 60 bucks for a full year of unlimited online storage and back up.

At the very lease though, my suggestion would be to sign up for Drop Box, and have your phone set up to sync your data off of there. Because if you are anything like me you probably don’t back up all of your pictures and video to your computer, or a hard drive, or even a thumb drive. They just sit on your phone taking up space, some of them get uploaded to Facebook or twitter, but the rest are just dormant files. What happens if your phone takes a shit on you though? Not all of my files were backed up to the MicroSD card in my phone, they were on the internal storage as well. My entire phone fried though, and I wasn’t able to save this files when my phone died. Thankfully they all backed up to Dropbox though!

I can tell I am starting to Ramble now. But hey, if I made at least one person aware, then I guess this post has served a purpose! Check it out. Dropbox.com

Blog Stats

It’s very interesting watching the statistic of my blog go up and down, who follows, who likes a post and all of that good stuff.  The biggest thing i really monitor is the amount of traffic coming through. And since the beginning of this month, I have made four posts, this being my fifth. Almost every post has been liked at least once, and one 11 times. The number of people who follow my blog has increased by about 5 or 6 followers. So obviously, people are reading my blog. The amount of hits my blog is getting though is not really going up though. So I’m wondering, does maybe traffic from other WordPress users not count as a unique visit to my website?  It doesn’t really matter much. It’s just a thought. If anyone reading this has some input please leave a comment. :D

Also, if you aren’t following any of the people shown in my screen shots, got check their blogs out! There are some really good ones!

Where My visits Come From

Self Education

A while back, about a year and a half ago I’d say, while browsing through one 4chans Technology /g/ board I came across a post about a free Online University that was designed and taught by some of the best college professors in the country. There wasn’t to much info about, but I checked it out because at the time I was very interested in learning more about computer science, and programming to be specific, and the first course I came across was CS101: Introduction to computer science, Building a Search Engine. I enrolled immediately to give this a try, but of course my enrollment was late, and at the time the courses were not open to join at any time, the ran like a typical college would hold class. Everyone started at the same time, and finished at the same time. So I waited, and when it finally came time to start, I did. About a week later though I quit my job and started traveling and no longer had the time to keep up with the class and learn.

Udacity is what I am talking about. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s well worth checking out. Now that I finally have the time for the first time in a year, I have re-enrolled in the CS101 class and am going through the class at my own pace. So far I seem to be learning quite a bit and I am very please with this. I’ll admit, even though the course description does say anyone can do this no matter what experience you may have. It’s still pretty difficult the farther you progress and I’d say that having at least a background in some web design would be very helpful. This is a programming class (that I am taking, their are other classes available of course) And without at least a little bit of familiarity with writing code, this will be very difficult.

I have found 15-30 minute blocks at a time is best for me to absorb the most information. The Lecture videos are not the most exciting, while it is awesome to learn, it’s good to take a break! So i watch 3 to 5 videos and take a break for a few hours and go back to. It seems to be working for me so far.

What is also great about this website is if you actually complete your course, and pass, you can get a certificate of completion that shows what you did. I believe on their website somewhere I read that over 400 different companies will recognize these certificates for employment consideration as well, which is phenomenal.  College might not be right for everyone, but if you still have the desire to learn something new, or at the very least exercise your brain, this is a great alternative. And it’s free!

So that’s that. Check it out. Maybe you’ll enjoy it as much as I am.

In other news. yesterday I had the sutures removed from my tongue. Everything feels a whole lot better now. I am still a bit swollen and sore, but that is all normal. it looks great though! When It’s fully healed I will make a full write about about my experience and perhaps take another video of my talking with my new tongues and demonstrate how it moves now.

Tah tah for now!
